Carr's Compendiums: Getting Started
Welcome to Carr's Compendiums.
This is a web-based demonstration of Carr's Compendium of the Vietnam War. It contains the contents of six published collections in this compendium, minus the actual document page images and document PDF files. We have included selected sample pages in the Military Assistance Command Vietnam 1964 Command History (Click here to go to the document's Table of Contents page). The sample pages include the Command Summary section and the complete Chapter III - Operations.
This site can also be used to familiarize yourself with the Main Viewer and the DocViewer and to test your browser's compatibility with the content. To report a browser compatability issue (Assuming you can even see this page to begin with), please click here. You may need to change your browser's settings to enable popup windows in order to display the DocViewer and document images on this website.
The Main Viewer presents the organization of this collection's content. Each document's Table of Contents has links to selected pages within the document. We have modeled the table of contents after those in the original documents. Clicking on the page links in a document's table of contents, brings up the document viewer and displays the selected page.
The document viewer, or DocViewer, is comparable to a microfilm reader, except that scanned digital images of each page have replaced the microfilm images. The document viewer is used to navigate through the selected document and display its contents. The information below will help you navigate the content on the disc using the Main Viewer and the DocViewer.
|Drop-down List||The drop-down list in the upper left portion of the frame provides access to the title's content and other useful information. Click on the drop-down list to display the content options.|
|List Pane||The left pane displays a list of information or document choices.|
|Content Pane||The right pane displays the selected information content.|
|Links||The List and Content panes contain links to other documents and topics. When the mouse cursor is placed over a link, the cursor changes, and the text of the link changes color and appears underlined. Selecting some links in a document's table of contents page opens the document in the DocViewer and displays the selected page.|
We have designed the DocViewer to correspond functionally to a microfilm reader. You can use the buttons on the Navigation Bar at the bottom of the DocViewer frame to navigate within a document, increase or decrease the levels of magnification, and print out the selected page. Some of these functions have keyboard equivalents. There are also three text boxes that indicate in order from left to right: the current image; the total number of pages in the current document and the level of magnification of the page image. There are six levels of magnification, with 6 the highest level supported.
|Back||Functions the same as a browser's Back button. Returns the reader to the last viewed page in the browser's History list.|
|Forward||Functions the same as a browser's Forward button. Returns the reader to the next page in the browser's History list.|
|First Page||Goes to the first page in the selected document.|
|Rewind||Click and hold down the left mouse button to scroll backwards through the document. Release the button to stop scrolling.|
|Previous Page||Goes to the previous page.|
|Current Page||Displays the current page image in the document. The page image number is not the same as the document page number. The document page number is displayed in the DocViewer's titlebar.|
|Total Pages||Displays the total number of page images in the document.|
|Next Page||Goes to the next page in the selected document.|
|Fast Forward||Click and hold down the left mouse button to scroll forward through the document. Release the button to stop scrolling.|
|Last Page||Goes to the last page in the currently selected document.|
|Zoom Out||Decreases the level of page magnification by one.|
|Zoom In||Increases the level of page magnification by one.|
|Prints the currently selected page image. To print a range of pages or the entire document see the Printing topic below.|
|Home||Goes to the first page in the selected document when the viewer has focus. Goes to the top of the displayed page when the page image has focus.|
|End||Goes to the last page in the currently selected document when the viewer has focus. Goes to the bottom of the displayed page when the page image has focus.|
|Page Up||Scrolls the page up.|
|Page Down||Scrolls the page down.|
|Left Arrow||Goes to the previous page when pressed briefly. Rewinds through the document when the key is held down.|
|Right Arrow||Goes to the next page when pressed briefly. Fast forwards through the document when the key is held down.|
|Up Arrow||Increases the level of page magnification by one when the viewer has focus. Scrolls the page up when the document pane has the focus.|
|Down Arrow||Decreases the level of page magnification by one when the viewer has focus. Scrolls the page down when the document pane has the focus.|
Individual pages can be printed from within the Document Viewer. To print an entire document from a collection, use the corresponding document's .PDF file in the PDFs folder on the disc. To view and print these files you will need a recent version of Adobe Acrobat or suitable software application to be installed on your machine. There is a link to the list of .PDF files on the page introducing each collection.
